A litle about the history of animation and what basic ideas started what we take for granted today. Simple flip books can be made!

The easiest annimations to do are flip books. You need a small notebook and you draw a tiny pic on the corner of the book where you can flip through all the images.

This is an interest art site - Keith lives in New York and has got loads of cartoons and flip art style animations - you can stop these and move them frame by frame and see the small changes which go into making a flip art animated picture!

Thaumatrope Motion Device

Pictures of a thaumatrope once you've seen one you will see how it works and then you'll be able to make your own. Its basically a circle of card with an image drawn on either side. Put string in a hole on either side of the circule (at 3 and 9 on a clock face) and then spin! The images will appear to be on the same side!

zoetrope - this is a drum with slits in with the pictures inside - when the drum is spun the pictures appear to make an animation.
